Covid 19, Vitamin D and Pink Salmon

Updated: Jan 27, 2021

I don't want to be a spreader of fake news and I know no more about Covid 19 than I read in the media. However, it seems that there is a growing argument that having good levels of Vitamin D is helpful in fighting the virus. There has been a study at the Spanish hospital Reina Sofia into the use of Calcifediol treatment on the Intensive Care Unit admission and mortality rate of Spanish patients with Covid 19.

Calcifediol is a prehormone that is produced in the liver by hydroxylation of Vitamin D and is measured by Doctors to establish the Vitamin D status of patients.

The investigation found that based on this study patients who had been administered a high dose of Calcifediol reduced the need for ICU treatment. They speculate that Calcifediol appears to lessen the disease severity although they admit larger trials need to be done. Vitamin D among other important functions in the body is known to play an important role in modulating the immune system.

Our bodies are able to produce Vitamin D when our skin is exposed to direct sunlight. You need 600 units of daily vitamin D reports the Linus Pauling Institute and this increases if you are over 70 years old to 800 units. For many people especially in higher latitudes their bodies do not produce this requirement from exposure to sunlight as they just don't spend enough time in direct sunlight, especially in the winter.

We need to get the extra Vitamin D from our diet and this is not easy as Vitammin D is not present in many foods. However, it is present in Salmon and in particular it is particularly high in Pink Salmon. An 85g serving of boneless Pink Salmon has more than 480 milligrams this is 107% of the RDA for Vitamin D,

There is also another benefit of eating Pink Salmon to provide you with more Vitamin D. Since Vitamin D relies on fat to function, it is important to have fat in your diet. Pink Salmon is a fatty fish but most of the fats are good fats. In an 85g serving of skinless Pink Salmon there are 4g

of fat. About three quarters of these fats are monounsaturated or polyunsaturated. These fats are thought to protect your heart by minimizing cholesterol build up.

So if you needed another excuse to go and

eat some Pink Salmon I think this is one of the best ones!!
